The Amazon Hipster Knife
[ Gerber EAB Lite Pocket Knife ]
I like knives. Always have.
Back in high school I was all about some Spyderco. Then I had a Benchmade phase. Then I got into William Henry.
And now I’ve gone hipster, and this post explains why.
The hipster knife advantage
The knife shown above I call my Hipster Amazon knife. It’s hipster because it returns to the basics, and it’s Amazon because I use it to open stuff that Amazon ships me (including the knife itself).
Here are some of the advantages that make it my current go-to:
The blade is infinitely razor sharp because it uses actual razor blades
The blades are dead cheap (like $10 a year)
If I accidentally take my knife to the airport and only have carry-on luggage (which has happened), I can just throw (or give) it away
I basically hate getting a dull edge on an expensive knife. It makes me not even want to use it, which is super dumb.
It’s true you can sharpen it, but all sharpening is not the same. Some is good, some is bad, and there isn’t a kind where you’re not ultimately removing metal from your blade.
That means you’re just removing part of your knife all the time, which is not cool. Especially when the main target is boxes. They’re murder on edges.
So with the Hipster Amazon approach you always have a wicked (razor) sharp blade. Always. You can swap out blades every month if you wanted to and it would still be epically cheap.
Summary
It’s wicked sharp
It’s perpetually wicked sharp
You don’t have to worry about loss or damage because it’s a $10 dollar knife
Notes
I may get another knife enclosure—one that’s a bit more high-end. But the concept will be the same: cheap with utility blades as the edge.
Here’s the knife pictured.
