Skate and Destroy
I skated for the first time in like 25 years today.
And I did it at a place where I used to skate a lot when I was a kid—at the park right next to the local library.
I didn’t try anything crazy. It took me a few minutes to get my muscle memory back, but it was surprisingly still there.
I haven’t fallen. Yet.
But when I do, it’s going to hurt a lot.
I’ve fallen hundreds of times in my life. I have lots of scars as evidence. But when I was falling before I was a teenager gumby person who weighed 150 pounds. Now I weigh close to double that.
My goal is pretty simple. I want to be able to just enjoy casual skating on beautiful days like today was. And I want to be able to ollie up a curb, at will.
I used to be damn good at ollies. Like 2-3 feet. Used to ollie off of the amphitheater’s stairs at my high school. Fly over like 6 concrete stairs. Land it. It was bliss.

But at this point I just want to be able to get up curbs and such. Maybe up on some concrete slabs or something. But I’m not trying to improve my game or anything. I’m in restore/enjoy/maintain mode at this point when it comes to skating.
But man, it felt so good.
Same old park. Same track around it. Like 68 degrees outside. Light wind. A few families enjoying the day. Even went in the library, with my board, like the old days as well.
The library where I did projects, starting in like 4th grade.
Surreal. What a fantastic Sunday.
Skate and Destroy.
Notes
The image is the actual board I have. Indy trucks (of course). I was so pleased to see a familiar design at the skate shop last week when I got it. It’s the small things in life.
