The Downside of Police Scrutiny

The crime rate in New York City is far above what it has been in recent years, and the reasons seems to be that cops are afraid to do their jobs for fear that they’ll be labeled oppressive, racist, or some other negative thing.

There are a few pieces to this, and we have to take the bad with the good.

1. Exposing bad cops to scrutiny is a good thing

2. We have to acknowledge, as a country, that police work is hard, and that we’re a decent society because our police do a generally good job

3. It’s extremely easy to criticize police work (or any other hard job) from the outside—even when it’s done right

What this means is that while we need to keep the scrutiny on those who make police look bad, we have to remember what a society looks like without the good ones, which is most of them.

I don’t know how much of the increased crime rate in NYC is propagating to other communities. And I don’t know how much of the increase came from decreasing good vs. bad police work.

But I do know that we need to be thankful for the good ones, and not let the few ruin the reputation of the many.

Put cameras on every cop. Let the truth emanate from that.
