One thing I realized I want to do recently is some sort of teaching in the town where I grew up.
I might be moving back there sometime soon, which would make it easier. But it’s not far away regardless. The town is not rich. It’s a working-class town with a lot of manual laborers (and their kids).
I feel like anything I can say that could help kids in high school (or elementary) to get involved in science or computers would be a good thing. And I feel like it’s owed.
I got lucky, so it’s my responsibility to try to help others. That’s how I see it. It’s cliché, but so is being nice to people. I’ll take it.
Anyway, here are some of the things I’m thinking about:
- A short presentation on careers in computer security. How to get good at the craft, how to get hired, etc.
- A short presentation on being a sought-after professional, i.e. how to become an A-player no matter what field you are in or what job you have
- Teaching one or two actual security classes
If you’ve done something similar or have any advice or ideas, let me know.
