Not my normal type of content, obviously, but there's a particular line in a movie that got me extremely interested in voices! I've always loved voices, but this one really got me. It was Bane from one of the Batman movies. And he said:
Peace has cost you your strength! Victory has defeated you!
And I was like, "That is the absolute sickest line I've ever heard!"
Then I started wondering, "How was he talking like this?" And how did it sound so cool!
And then I realized that almost everything he says just sounds cool.
Being a little bit into voices when I was younger, I decided to try to figure out how to do this voice.
So I proceeded to watch these scenes over and over and then I started looking at YouTube videos to figure out like, what supposedly is the secret - the decomposition of how to do it.
Honestly, I just have not liked any of the videos. I've seen people do pretty good Bane, but I've not seen anyone explain it well.
So what I'm going to do is explain my decomposition of Bane's voice, and then I'll show you how I do it!
Component 1 is actually the biggest secret that no one seems to have figured out! And that is it is an old man's voice.
There is a particular scene when Bane is standing up after being on the ground where he slowly puts his hand on his knee and forces himself to stand as if it takes extraordinary effort. He even grunts during this period.
It seriously sounds like an old man standing up. And that is when it actually clicked for me on how to do his voice.
The second component is theatrical delivery - dramatic high-to-low oscillations that create that signature flourish in his speech patterns.
This theatrical element is what makes simple statements sound epic and memorable. It's the dramatic vocal movement that turns ordinary dialogue into something cinematic and powerful.
The final essential element is the British accent. It's not exactly a posh London accent, but it has that distinctive British sound quality that gives Bane his sophisticated yet menacing tone.
The accent provides the refined articulation that makes every word crisp and deliberate, contributing to the character's intellectual yet threatening presence.
