America is Falling Because You Can’t Maintain a Democratic Republic With a Stupid Population

idiocracy

Why is America failing?

Well, for thousands of reasons, I hear you saying. I know it’s crass to oversimplify, but I feel like 2020 is the year to do it. We need some clarity in all this chaos, and I have some for you.

America is failing because it’s full of stupid people. Stupid people who can vote.

We either have a smart population or we get a lesser form of government. It’s that simple.

No, calm down. This isn’t a policy post. I’m not saying we should have new criteria for voting. And I’m not saying we should start over with a new idea. I’m not here to offer solutions this time.

I’m saying America is done. It’s inevitable at this point.

Americans spent the last twenty years poking fun at developing countries, saying the reason democracy never holds is that the people aren’t ready for it. There’s often truth to that, but the joke’s on us because now it applies to us as well.

We’re an un-developing country.

  • Only around a third of Americans think we evolved without supernatural influence. More

  • Two-thirds of millennials don’t know what Auschwitz was. More

  • During the 2016 election, 40% of Americans couldn’t name the VP candidates. More

  • 45% of Americans believe in ghosts and demons. More

  • Over 1 in 5 can’t name a single branch of government. More

This is why we have antivax. This is why we have climate change denial. And this is how we got a reality TV star as president.

It’s really simple—democracy requires education. And I don’t mean law and computer degrees.

I’m talking about basic education, like the idea that war is bad. That American means anti-Nazi. That diseases are worse than vaccines. And that wearing a face mask during a pandemic is patriotic behavior.

We knew this in 1920, but we don’t know this in 2020. That’s a hundred years. 100.

But I don’t want you to be mad about it. Don’t look for someone to blame. That’s the game everyone’s playing. Don’t succumb.

I prefer the Harari model. Just look at it from the perspective of history. It’s a lesson learned.

(pulls out pencil)

What America’s fall taught the West was that you can’t allow a rich and educated elite to run away with all the education and good jobs while the other 80% rots away in superstition and squalor.

(nods head with pursed lips)

Ok, fair enough.

Good to know for next time.
