I think the most devastating thing that could happen to the Republican party is for the American people to learn what they’re trying to accomplish. Here’s what someone on the left could say in coming elections:
The Minimum Wage Would Be Removed: Republicans think people making minimum wage are making too much money, and they want you to be able to be paid half—or less than half—of your current wage so that it’ll make you work harder.
Light Drugs Would Be Completely Banned: Despite claiming to be about freedom and responsibility, Republicans love to ban things. Instead of legalizing marijuana, which we know to be FAR less dangerous than tobacco or alcohol, they would instead ban it completely. This keeps people in jail who shouldn’t be there, and prevents a significant revenue source in legalization.
Gays and Other Alternatively Gendered People Would be Ostracized and Bullied: Most Republicans don’t believe that people are born the way they are, and they like to try to force people to be the way they want them to be. Expect to see far fewer programs for people like this, and far more implied support of hating them.
Womens’ Rights Would Move Backward: Republicans are active supporters of the notion that women should stay at home and be the mother and homemaker. And while that should be an option for any woman, we believe that discouraging equality among the sexes is simply bad for society as a whole—men and women.
Health Insurance Will Return to a Pure Profit Game: Any progress made over the next few years through everyone having insurance will be rolled back, and any opportunity to inject more companies making more money into the system will be taken. They don’t see healthcare as an essential service for Americans; they see it as a way to make money off of the population. Remember, everything is about how to become rich. It should fail to surprise, therefore, that healthcare is so expensive: you make more money when you charge people more–expect it.
Republicans Would Control Womens’ Reproductive Rights: Again, quite against the spirit of personal responsibility and freedom, Republicans continue to strive control what women can do with their bodies. Expect more of that, including a direct attack on Roe vs. Wade.
Corporations Will Continue to Enjoy Billions in Tax Breaks While Common Workers Barely Scrape By: Those making millions and billions will be taxes less and less, and those working multiple jobs and barely paying their bills will struggle to pay for childcare, health insurance, education, etc.
So here’s the picture:
Republicans think that unsuccessful people deserve what they get and don’t care much about helping those who haven’t had the advantages they have.
Equally poisonous, they place profit above anything. They want to have tons of unskilled workers competing for the same jobs, which drives the price they have to pay down. That means that when someone wants some time off because they’re sick, or because they want a vacation, or whatever…they will be able to say, “Well, you can take vacation, but I don’t think that shows much dedication. There are thousands of others who are willing to work more hours and not take vacation, so do what you want to.” Workers become expendable resources that get replaced with another expendable unit when they don’t do exactly what the company wants.
Added to that, unemployment benefits will be massively cut, and as soon as automation/computers/robots can perform the activities of the workers they do have they’ll cut those workers too. This all comes down to a basic difference of perspective: Republicans see employees as a necessary evil and a drain on profits, not as the most important part of our country. The ideal for them is to have the business owners on top making millions of dollars, and robots doing all of the work (who they don’t have to pay). That’s the ideal they’re working towards.
It’s important to note here that these aren’t scare tactics. I’m not conjuring this dystopia from the air around us. It sounds like a dystopia because the ideas are so terrifically horrible, but the fact is that these actually represent the current political efforts of the Republican party. In brief, I’m not the one telling you they want to do this: they are. In the notes I’m including some links to their real-world current efforts to make these things a reality.
So much of the Republican strategy is based on obscuring their actual goals because they know the regular folks would discard them outright if they were transparent. So that’s the best way to beat them: Simply bring their actual goals into the light.
