This picture exemplifies why I use Apple instead of Google for my mobile platform. It reminds me of a single point—Google is an ad company.
Apple is not. Apple is a lifestyle company. They obsess over how their products look and feel. They debate and stress and act snotty over the smallest detail, and take their pride and reputation far too seriously.
And I like that.
Google could give a damn, and nothing makes this more clear than the image above. I searched for something earlier tonight on my iPad and a full 80% of the page was either ads or wasted space. Un. Believable. And we wonder why much of Android looks and feels like rubbish.
But ask yourself a question: is this because Google is somehow inferior? Um…no.
Google is trying to give us robot cars, cure cancer, move the human mind to digital form, and do all manner of awesomeness. They’re not lacking in ambition or capability.
With Android their purpose is simply in another direction: build an operating system that gets as many ads to as many people as possible. You can imagine people complaining to the business side of Android:
Fragmentation! I don’t care.
This one widget thing doesn’t look super clean! I don’t care.
This “experience” doesn’t feel right! I don’t care.
And I get that. I accept it. I even understand it.
In brief, Google is not competing in the same space as Apple and losing. Instead, they’re using Android as a revenue platform so they can advance the state of humanity.
This makes me respect Google more, not less. When you apply the visiting alien test to Google and Apple, you can see that Google clearly wins. They’re working to move the human race forward while Apple is trying to make coffee snobs REALLY like their lifestyle products.
So on the larger scale I actually respect Google far more than Apple. But I will damn sure be using Apple products while doing so.
