I wanted to quickly point out two instances of the GOP pretending they’re opposing overreaching liberal agendas when they’re actually doing exactly what their lobbyists want them to do.
- Gun Violence Research: Congress just outlawed the CDC and NHS from performing gun violence research for like the umpteenth time. They claim this is because they don’t want government money being spent on partisan politics, i.e. they’re worried liberals will use that data to promote gun control. The real reasons is that their gun lobbyists are incredibly scare of what such research might find, so they are making sure it stays illegal.
- Net Neutrality: The GOP is opposing net neutrality, which is the very simple notion that people should be able to view and partake any kind of content they want on their internet connection, i.e. not pay more for certain things, or be disallowed to view others because of relationships that their ISP has with certain companies. The GOP opposes net neutrality supposedly because “it’s overreaching government to claim that internet is a utility”. The real reason is that lobbyists can’t wait to charge people extra money for services on the internet they already pay for, and to shut down access to competitors of the companies their client ISPs have relationships with.
In both cases you have massive money to be made by doing the wrong thing, and therefor lobbyists are doing their very best to make that happen. And to cover that up, they’re giving an extremely thin “opposing the liberals” explanation for their actions.
Don’t listen to me, though. Go research it.
