I think Google is good at data and poor at presentation. I submit as evidence the experience of using Google Contacts.
Every time I enable chat within Gmail I get a different experience. Some of my contacts show up, some don’t. Some are listed twice, others are shown as email addresses (many of which I don’t recognize). And still others show up as mangled names.
I hear there is an option I could enable to make this not suck. That shouldn’t be an option. If anything, there should be an option to make it suck. But no–they went with it as a default.
I care about the integrity of my data–especially my contact data. For Google to do such a poor job of handling this piece as compared to Address Book / MobileMe tells me that I’m with the right combination of providers for the time being.
I.e.: Apple for main operating systems and interfaces, with Google as my back-end data / mail providers. I have the same negative feelings about Apple as an email infrastructure provider: They suck at it. ::
