In the IT world it’s easy to find debates about how to pronounce things, and one of the more famous of these over the years has been the pronunciation of Linux. The basic mistake people make is going with the hyper-liberal view that there are many correct ways to say everything, and that neither is more correct or more wrong than another.

Bullocks.

When an authority for a particular product or movement explicitly states how that thing is pronounced, that pronunciation does in fact become the correct one.

And what does Linus Torvalds, the father of Linux, say about how to pronounce the operating system he created?

That’s about as clear as it gets. ::

The latest version of Gentoo Linux has just been released. Here are some of the highlights:

an updated installer

improved hardware support

a complete rework of profiles

a move to Xfce instead of GNOME on the LiveCD

tons of updated ebuilds

I’m especially excited about the Xfce change; I love minimalist interfaces. So I think this going to be my main distribution here at home. I want to use Ubuntu more, but I just keep coming back to Gentoo. I think this speaks to the concept of,

Assuming you’re choosing from one of the leading options, the “best” Linux distribution is the one you’re most comfortable with.

And for me this is definitely Gentoo.

Screw the distro-religous wars: Gentoo rocks, Ubuntu rocks, Debian rocks, Fedora rocks, SuSe rocks. All these top distros rock because Linux rocks. Linux is the loyal companion that will be there if/when OS X deteriorates due to management or philosophy changes at Apple.

Support your favorite distro whenever you can; it’s good for Linux and it’s good for technology innovation in general.:

I have a problem. I hate when people mispronounce things. It pains me to hear “line-ix”, “oh-es-ex”, or “you-bun-too”.

Ubuntu is becoming more of an issue these days. As it gets more popular more are getting the opportunity to mangle it. When I first saw the name I proceeded to mess it up myself, but I immediately sought out the right way to say it (weird, I know). I found a video clip of Nelson Mandela pronouncing it. It was most informative and quite clear.

oo-boon-too

Ah, but people still want to argue.

The way you say it doesn’t matter, as long as you know what they meant.

Shure. Kep one beeleeving thate. Just because someone can figure out what you mean doesn’t make it right. If that were the case then what would be the point of syntax at all? Why not just gesture wildly and grunt until the other person gets the idea?

Anyway, for those who aren’t convinced by the whole authentic African pronunciation bit, here’s a screenshot from the official site a few moments ago:

Ooo. Boon. Too.

Saying something else is not a different kind of right; it’s just wrong.:

–
[ Update: Well, thanks for the few positive comments that have been left. A couple of thoughts come to mind given the responses.
1. We're not talking about varying pronunciations of common things. These are names that have explicitly defined ways for pronouncing them as determined by an accepted authority. Linus Torvalds is a Linux authority and he says very clearly that Linux is always pronounced "Lih-nucks". That means something. Apple explicitly says that it's "OS *TEN*". And it's the same with Ubuntu. They told us how they want us to pronounce these things because it matters to them, so it should matter to us as well.

2. I'm not advocating an anal enforcement of static language (that would be stupid). Language changes; it always has and it always will. The point is simply that all pronunciations of well-defined names are not equal. Calling the capital of the U.S. \WAY-Chang-TONE\ (Washington) is not a different type of correct. And the fact that someone could figure out what you meant doesn't make it so.

3. There is a slider between promoting accuracy in communication using syntax and allowing the natural evolution of language. Either extreme is wrong. My simple point here is that when we have an explicit and authoritative example to follow in the case of a name we should embrace it and promote its proper usage.

So, ultimately, is this as important as our next elections in the U.S. or solving the energy crisis? Of course not. But it's just a website talking about language and geek stuff. Relax. :) ]

It’s a Gentoo-based system, which intruiges me greatly. This site runs Gentoo and it’s been my favorite distro since I started using it back in 2002. The news that there’s now a “desktop flavor” is interesting indeed.

Check it out and let me know what you guys think. I’ll have it in a Fusion Virtual Machine here shortly as well.

Normally the first thing I do on a Windows system (after installing 40,000 updates and restarting three times) is install Firefox. A number of non-Microsoft habits follow, including using Google as my search engine. Well, I’m not going to do that anymore — at least not in Windows.

From now on, when using my Windows system (Vista + Office 2007 in VMware), I’m going to use nothing but Microsoft solutions — Internet Explorer, Windows Live Search, etc. And I’m also going to experiment more with their latest products.

The idea here is to force myself to remain exposed to Microsoft’s solutions. I like Active Directory. I like Office. Microsoft has potential, and I’m doing both myself and my clients a disservice by shunning their offerings due to their spotty past.

So that’s the new rule: whenever in Windows I’m going to do everything the way that Microsoft would want me to, just to see how it goes. If I remain unimpressed by Microsoft’s offerings after honestly giving them a chance I’ll at least have gained the ability to articulately discuss their shortcomings based on current experiences.:

I just finished getting Mail.app to recognize two seperate SSL certs from my server — one for imap.dmiessler.com, and another for smtp.dmiessler.com. This was less than trivial (mostly due to my own stupidity).

What this means is that I can finally use real domain names in my certificates (self-signed) for two separate hostnames while avoiding the annoying prompts that OS X likes to throw when it senses tomfoolery.

Here are the steps:

Create your Postfix certificates the way Weitse wants you to, using your SMTP hostname.

Import both the CA cert and your actual Postfix certificate into OS X.

For IMAP, edit your imapd.cnf file to reflect your IMAP hostname, etc.

Run
mkimapdcert
.

Import that certificate into OS X.

Now when you open Mail.app you should not get prompted to accept any certificates. The trick is that you need to import the CA’s cert on the Postfix side or it won’t work. But with courier this is not required. It has something to do with the format of the certificates being different.

It’s on my list of things to research, but for now I’m just happy I got it working exactly as I want it.

I know you don’t believe me, as we’ve had this conversation before. But there will come a time in your life when you will grow tired of fixing your tools. This will likely lead you to Windows or OS X — both of which, if you avoid tweaking, offer much more stability through updates and patches than Linux desktops do.

So again, let me restate my blasphemous claim:

Linux desktops are currently still for hobbyists and tweakers, i.e. those who enjoy tinkering constantly with the very platform that they work from. Those who wish to actually *work* — in an uninterrupted fashion through multiple, major updates — are left with the options of either installing an extremely stable, non-cutting-edge distribution and not updating any pivotal packages, or going with an alternative operating system.

In short, I equate “fixing” my operating system with “repairing” a hammer: I might do it once, but the second time the head pops off while I’m trying to work — it’s getting replaced.

I know a number of Linux desktop fans that consider Windows and OS X to be the “dirty” options for a number of reasons, but virtually every time I speak with them I get another reinstall story. They’re constantly repairing this or that in order to get the experience they want. And again, if that’s what’s fun for them, and they enjoy hacking their system and making cool new features work, then that’s awesome. In that case I think Linux is the ultimate desktop.

But for those who just want to work, I find that even my friends who love the Linux desktop more than anything are constantly frustrated with it. You take something like Ubuntu — it’s designed from the ground up to be a stable desktop. I have a friend that uses it and complains constantly about the fact that if you update it enough it breaks. The solution, if you want stability from it, is to basically not touch the thing and wait for the next version to get new features.

So from me to you, I ask you to probe your own thoughts on the matter. Do you want to use your system as a transparent tool to accomplishing something, or do you want your system to be in the forefront — constantly requiring your attention because this feature isn’t working right, or that part just broke after an update? If the answer is the latter, I’ll just shut up, because that’s obviously perfectly legitimate. But if it’s the former I ask you to take another look at your OS choice on the desktop.

I know a guy who’s been doing hardcore C programming for 25 years, and is an absolute Unix GOD — but he uses Windows for his operating system. Why? Because he has work to do, and he doesn’t want his OS getting in the way.:

–
Edit: I probably should have pointed out that I am an avid Linux advocate. I am a member of the Free Software Foundation and give to my distro regularly. The site you are looking at is running on Gentoo, actually — a distro I’ve been using since 2002. At work I use Ubuntu Linux as my primary operating system, and while I’m no super-guru, I’m decently versed in Linux in general. In short, my comments come from a familiarity and love for Linux, not from some random troll world.
