To train in BJJ is to continually drown—or, rather, to be drowned, in sudden and ingenious ways—and to be taught, again and again, how to swim.
I love this encapsulation of BJJ. You should also read the main article, as it gives a very solid description of this martial art. Plus you’ll get to see how prone to delusion humans really are.
This was phenomenally entertaining.
Absolutely stunning armbar variations. Seriously beautiful to watch.

Hélio Gracie did more for Martial Arts than anyone anyone but Bruce Lee in my opinion. The reason B.J. Penn and GSP are fighting tomorrow on the UFC, in front of millions of people, is directly due to his influence.
Thank you, Helio Gracie, for your contribution to Martial Arts. ::

Here’s a really cool image from ellenforney.com that she’s made into wallpaper for your desktop and iPhone. The one above is for the iPhone, but on the link below she has other sizes.
Nice work, Ellen!
So I’m back doing Jujitsu again, and I got destroyed in class last night. I was physically ill for like 30 minutes after we finished, like to the point of vomiting. Not good.
Anyway, I still feel completely foreign down there. I have no thinking faculties when I’m on the ground. I’m doing ZERO Jujitsu. All I’m doing is using strength-based wrestling and forgetting to breathe. So when I get up I have to rest for like 3 minutes just to be able to catch my breath. It’s quite sad.
On a possitive note, however, I did almost land my first arm bar last night. I grabbed an arm, pivoted the hips, and threw up the legs. He wiggled out of it, but it felt good to actually FEEL like I should do something and have it almost work out.
So yeah…at this rate I expect my blue belt in like 2017.
My buddy Ken’s Jujitsu coach is a contestant on the Ultimate Fighter, and here’s some video of him competing in a Jujitsu competition.
So I go in for my allergy work-up tomorrow. Pin pricks with lots of stuff that makes me sneeze and wheeze. It’s going to rock.
But then I get allergy shots (pills and sprays are sub-optimal). I just hope my insurance pays for it all or most of it.
And it’s all part of a plan. Aside from just wanting to not sneeze, get constant sinus infections, and have less cardio performance—I’m mostly doing this so that I can have my full wind for Jujitsu class.
The place I go to went through some changes recently, and I haven’t been going. But it’s all better now. It’s been bought by three main Jujitsu guys—including a wicked sick black belt who’s been an instructor for the Gracies in Brazil. He’s scary good.
And they are keeping their kickboxing classes as well, which will serve as a nice change of tempo on occasion.
So, things are good on this front. Allergy shots –> starting back in Jujitsu with a “new” school. Now I’ll get to try out my new gi.:
