A wicked quote about how Google just crushed the two companies that used to supply it map information:
“Street View wasn’t just a neat way to get imagery to accompany the data already found in Google Maps. As it happens, it was a way to drive the same roads that were already in Google Maps, tracing them with Google’s own road teams, and—through efficiency and brute force—do away with those costly map licenses. Google has mapped the US, and will surely map the rest of the world soon enough.”
So i’m in a bar, about to order a Guinness, and before i can release the words from my mouth the bartender comes up to me with a dark, rich, full glass of irish goodness, telling me it’s on the house. Before i can ask “how did you know,” she tells me “A regular pays me twenty dollars in advance every night to give a few random patrons a free Guinness. He said once that before he dies he would like to know he lived in a world where someone, somewhere, received a free beer, no strings attached, for no particular reason whatsoever.” Since then i’ve donated at least 100 USD in the past four months to the same cause. It doesn’t matter whether or not i’ve received a free beer since, because someone else has.
