What Really Happened in Georgia
By Daniel Miessler on August 24th, 2008: Tagged as Politics
For those who are only casually interested in politics I thought I’d give my thoughts on the Georgia-Russia conflict. This is not 100% fact. It’s me giving you my best opinion based on the numerous inputs I’ve used to construct my opinion, e.g. CNN, NPR, NYT Blogosphere, etc., And yes, Fox News was one of the inputs.
In short, it looks like Georgian troops—not Russian—attacked a small ethnic minority area of Georgia, called South-Ossetia. Russia came to help them.
This doesn’t mean Russia didn’t enjoy the opportunity. It doesn’t mean Russia isn’t potentially dangerous with Putin handling things and trying to essentially rebuild the Soviet Union. But it looks like this interference by the Russians was truly for a good reason, namely to keep a group of people from being oppressed and/or wiped out (I’m not sure what the goal of the Georgian government was).
The Real Story
The key here is not the war; it’s the American media’s treatment of it. American media—especially Fox News—has been calling this Russian oppression for weeks. They love it. It’s a good story for their simple minds, and the simple minds of their viewers.
It’s very clean.
- Nice Georgians broke away from Russia a long time ago
- Russians attack them under the cover of the Olympics
- Bad, bad Russians
- That’s why we need a strong leader like McCain—to control those evil Russians
But that’s not what happened. It looks like what really happened was:
- Georgian government wants to tear up South Odessia
- They know Russia will respond
- They know that when Russia responds they’ll be able to call it Soviet aggression
- They do it.
- The world calls it Soviet aggression
- The world chants, “Bad, bad Russia.”
Land of the Sheeple
If Russia attacking Georgia is consistent with your conservative, Pro-American views, then sure…they must have done it. Don’t listen to any opposing information.
That’s the country we live in.
We’re heading toward a bad place in this country. Once the people are too stupid to tell truth from lies, all hopes of a free society are gone.:
