What about the person with the narcissistic comfortable superiority non-complex that is shrouded in a deep veil of self loathing who has a passive idea of materialism linked with a clear understanding that not knowing or ever attaining is terminal.

Moving into space-constrained SF my SO and I had to go though this process as well. It is cleansing to limit the consumption of your space only to things that you really actively benefit from.

I have a good friend who has problems with self esteem, yet can be quite brilliant, when the need arises. I am going to recommend that she reads this post! Self Esteem Affirmations

The DVD thing I think it something many people can relate to. I have a fair amount of DVDs, and I don't watch any of them frequently.
I think for me there are two forces at play.
The first is that I like having the ability to watch any of these movies at will, or on a whim (i.e. I don't have to make a trip to the rental store.) Services like Hulu are allowing me to justify not buying so many DVDs. I hope the TV on-demand (for free) thing really heats up over the next couple years.
The second is that in many ways these DVDs act as a decoration. They convey my personality and interests to visitors the same way my clothing does.
