Yeah, I realize I’m the last person to discover this, but the latest version of Ubuntu is just sick beyond words. I just redid my main workstation distro from FC5 to Ubuntu 6.06. I’m an OS X guy, to be sure, but my main work OS is Linux. I don’t spend much time interfacing with a Linux desktop, but when I do I want two things — stability and a clean look/feel.
Nothing bothers me more than a desktop that requires work to maintain it. It goes back to “fixing tools”, and it’s something I can’t tolerate. This distro allows me to simply “do” things without consideration for how I’m doing them — a sure sign of a solid OS. The polished feel of this release combined with the apt package management system makes for an utterly godlike environment.
Anyway, this version of Ubuntu rocks. I haven’t tried any exotic hardware or anything, but as far as ease of use I really think this project is getting Linux where it needs for the desktop. It’s no OS X, but at least it’s playing the same sport finally.
Way to go, Ubuntu. Some cash as a sign of support is on its way…
