Those are very good reasons why Twitter is making headway.

But, I really value the limiting aspect, forcing people to make deliberate statements.

Yes, people overdue it. "Who knew brushing my dog's teeth would be so effin cool!" is Twitter abuse.

I think you're right Daniel, it's a great way to keep in contact with friends who aren't exactly 'hang out after work' distances away. I also believe it's the 'arms distance' that twitter provides that makes it great. People covet their Facebook, IM, and email accounts like they are secrets to hide. Twitter gives away only your handle and name. And only a finite amount more after that if you want. You can block who you want to block, follow who you want to follow. It's a sort of open anonymity that breaks down barriers of communication and confrontation to allow for interactions and meetings to occur that otherwise wouldn't have ever happened.

facebook does what you talked about better than Twitter does. Twitter is great – or can be great – but not for those reason. it's social bookmarking on steroids – searchable, sortable, simple and with desktop clients that extend it's usability.

the personal connection stuff is theoretically nice but not what drives it

I like your Freudian Typo “out of SITE, out of mind” … very “web” of you.

As for the rest .. your explanation might help me understand twitter if people used it only to stay in touch with their old friends. I remain more convinced the VERY humerous anti-twitter animation you linked to some time back.
