The Staggering Accomplishments of Jews

Breathtaking stats from a recent NY Times piece by David Brooks:

Jews are a famously accomplished group. They make up 0.2 percent of the world population, but 54 percent of the world chess champions, 27 percent of the Nobel physics laureates and 31 percent of the medicine laureates.

Jews make up 2 percent of the U.S. population, but 21 percent of the Ivy League student bodies, 26 percent of the Kennedy Center honorees, 37 percent of the Academy Award-winning directors, 38 percent of those on a recent Business Week list of leading philanthropists, 51 percent of the Pulitzer Prize winners for nonfiction.

    They are always worth observing as those who can do something worth repeating. Stereotipically speaking, their reputation stands as an example for what to do to achieve success.

    I tend to think it has to do with the more “hands on” nature of parenting they do. My generation was rather left to fend for themselves, and this includes what was expected of us. I'm taking a greater role in what my kids will accomplish than was taken by my parents in raising me. Hopefully this will make an improvement, and I can say it was in part inspired by observing the closer families and their successes.

    ps, It always astounded me that the Vietnamese family that lived next door at Foxwood were so quiet, despite the fact that there were up to 10 of them at any time. They started by renting, then they were buying, then then picked up two more units. Hard workers that planted little colonies and circled the wagons, with a plan and a means to do it. Really amazing. It's not limited to one or two demographics, but really practical without regard to demographics.
