Shane,
While on the whole the situation is not entirely relevant, it does seem immature and if part of their campaign is about reaching across party lines, this certainly shows otherwise.

Derek, I just don't think it is a big deal that Palin wanted her to resign (as long as it did not involve the book-banning issue). If you want me to defend Palin's request, I would say that we don't know how vocal or cooperative the librarian was. Also, the librarian worked for the public library and was therefore a government employee (not sure if it was city or state). Palin did not fire her, she requested her resignation and the librarian declined to resign and everyone moved on. So, my point is that: yes, it seems a little weird like it could have been a personal disliking, but Palin broke no laws and overall it does not seem like a major knock against her as a Vice Presidential candidate.

Shane, when it comes down to the difference of librarian being a vocal opposition to Palin and the librarian having a political preference, there really is little difference that should reflect upon her ability to perform her job.

What political ties does a librarian have with government? She could absolutely hate Palin and tell everyone she knows that, and it's irrelevant on her ability to succeed at her job.

Shane,

That was an extraordinarily great comment.

I am constantly aware of how my emotion and my biases influence my view of the world. I try and keep my perspective clear, but it's hard and I remain vigilant.

Keep in mind that I was a Ron Paul supporter when he was running, so I can embrace Republican views. I can embrace Republicans, too. I am not labeling all Republicans as the same based on a few.

I'm speaking specifically of a particular mass of people that are being targeted by the Republican strategy---the same people I interact with every day.

I don't think it's wrong to discuss the faults with a massive majority of people in a particular group; that's the whole point of looking at trends and polls and movements; to understand how thought happens in these large groups. It doesn't mean I deny there are outliers.

Does this clear anything up?

Derek, a "vocal supporter of Palin’s opposition" is not the same as a "political preference". One is much more extreme.

Daniel, you say "I see smug, religious, non-thinkers who cling to a simple view of the world..." and "overall moral superiority complex" and then say "It’s trashy, pure and simple" while discussing hypocrisy nonetheless. I think you would better understand the issues here if you stop looking at the people and letting your emotions get involved. There ARE completely idiotic Republicans and Neo-cons walking the Earth and on TV (just like that Daily Show clip Carl posted) but I think the reason why you can't understand the Republican party is because THAT is who you choose to listen to. Fox News commentators are political hacks (like Olberman).

Anyway, the Palin issues you point out show that you haven't investigated them beyond dailykos, dailyshow, digg and reddit.
Science vs creationism: McCain says he believes in evolution and Palin says she thinks Creationism should be allowed to be discussed in the classroom along side the evolution-only curriculum. She does NOT believe that the govt should force schools to teach creationism: http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5gV5jvU52RD3WBflzbmSu5l6zwOqAD92V3VQG0

Banned books: the rumored banned book list is word-for-word the same as this list: http://www.lib.fit.edu/pubs/librarydisplays/bannedbooks/website.htm
I don't know why she wanted to talk to the librarian about their book policy but if no books were banned, then there is no issue.

The rest of the issues you had were either based on idiotic Republican talking points used for crappy tv shows or based on your general dislike for religious people.

"The world is not simple, and people that try to make it so, and fit it into their own little manufactured reality, are dangerous." ...Fitting and so true.

TIMM,
Well, if there was a specific list or not, the fact that the issue was even brought to the table is kind of messed up to me.

The request for resignation simply because she supported Palin's opposition is messed up as well. The person was a librarian. What does her political preference have to do with the librarian's ability to perform their job?

Derek,

For the sake of full disclosure, I presented the article, which informs the best it could without implication, yet also with a conclusion.

There is no list of books to be banned. It was addressed by the article here:

"Palin didn't mention specific books at that meeting,
    Kilkenny said.

"At the time Palin called her inquiries rhetorical
and simply part of a policy discussion, according
    to the Frontiersman article.

"Were any books banned? June Pinnell-Stephens,
chairwoman of the Alaska Library Association's
Intellectual Freedom Committee since 1984, checked
her files last week and came up empty-handed."

As a parent I would like to hear that president of the Alaska Library Association will adhere to some established level of decency while stocking books, which she answered by stating "The books in the Wasilla Library collection were selected on the basis of national selection criteria for libraries of this size, and I would absolutely resist all efforts to ban books." This is sufficient to answer my fears that children may not be exposed to what some may be called "art", but is also graphic child pornography, or other books ranging from how to commit suicide or murder to the ever popular Anarchist's Cookbook, without establishing such a listing for groups like the ACLU to rally around.

A request for resignation was made on the basis that Emmons was a local and vocal supporter of Palin's opposition, which can complicate the relationship as concurrent public servants. However, no further action was take or enforced. Emmons remained in her position without further incidences. (Note, this request was made before Emmons satisfied Palin's question.)

I hope to have answered your interest in this rumor.

-=T=-

TIMM, you article you post seems to suggest that Palin did indeed approach the library about banning books. And also that she abused her power (employment termination).
