The New Great Bands

There is something of a revolution taking place in music right now. A handful of bands have come out in recent years that are fresh to the degree of revolution. Looking for similarities I find 1. extreme technical prowess, 2. lyrical depth, and 3. unorthodoxy.

Here is a short list, ordered by my preference, of the bands that I personally feel belong in this category:

  • Mars Volta
  • Forward Russia
  • Coheed and Cambria

If you are into “musician music” and are not familiar with these three bands, you have not yet been born. I think these bands are resetting standards and possibly even creating a new class of music altogether.

    I would suggest checking out The Fall of Troy as well. definitely “math rock” (odd time and really technical). If you can get your hands on an album, go for it. The two two that I have are Doppelganger and Manipulator. They impress me, but are not as “epic” as The Mars Volta or Coheed. Not even close. But, they have some really nice rhythms and guitar patterns. They have videos on YouTube, but all of them suck as far as sound. Overall, the singer reminds me of a cross between cedric from mars volta and claudio from coheed with a little more screaming. Enough already, just go buy it. Also, which Mars Volta have you been listening to lately?

    I got into C&C a couple years back, something about Claudio’s Geddy Lee-like helium-imbibed whalings that are quite nice.

    But it is very, very, epic.
