Have you done any research into Master’s level programs that is more focused on technical/practical, similar to the GIAC GSE. Most I have seen are Information Assurance centering around the business portions (policies, disaster recovery, management, etc)

Daniel, I would love to keep in touch with you as you prepare for the GSE, start documenting the steps people go through (stephen@sans.edu).

Sean, the GSE is not part of the SANS Master’s program requirement for the engineer degree. http://www.sans.edu

I believe the requirements for the masters program may have changed per: http://www.sans.edu/programs/community.php

The following applies to students in the MSISE program who were admitted into the master's program ON OR AFTER September 15, 2008:

The student must pass the GIAC GSE. For details about the GSE, see http://www.giac.org/certifications/gse.php. To understand more about misconceptions surrounding the GSE and for tips on Preparing for the GSE, see http://www.sans.edu/programs/gse_prep.php.

    Hello Daniel,

I remember reading this post shortly after you wrote it and thinking the GSE was always going to be one step beyond me. Well, two years on, lots and lots of study with real world hands-on practice and taking a chance, I’m now a GSE.

A number of your blog pieces really helped out this slow windows admin understand Linux’s CLI for my GSE study. Thank you for taking the time to write them up and make them easy to understand and apply.

I learned a huge amount from the whole event; from simply working on systems I won’t normal touch to the pressure cooker of the exam itself.

I hope you decide to give the exam ago, as I believe you’d enjoy the experience and it’s fantastic goal to strive for.

    Regards,

    Chris
