Scott Adams is the archetypical maladjusted geek, who can see & appreciate talent, but sees & deplores incompetence much more. A few things he’s said & written over the years make me think that imbalance applies to his self-image as well. His need to prove others wrong smacks of insecurity. You can see the result in his work, both Dilbert—where even the protagonists are insipid, pathetic individuals, their clear intelligence notwithstanding—& his blog—where he tries to make everyone reveal themselves as the idiots his inadequacies demand they be.

His brand of “infotainment” starts byciting some insignificant idiocy or mistake, but the real entertainment though comes from those who respond. Even when he’s wrong he’ll make terrible counterarguments to their responses to rile them up more. They’re the entertainment, & he’s the one laughing & feeling superior. His readership isn’t really the audience; they’re the cheering squad. He’s just a massive troll with some corporate insight & an inferiority complex. It’s a lot of fun to read, but if you correct him, you’re the butt.
