New Mac, Cleanup

Well, I did it. I just bought myself a new MacBookPro. I got the better of the two — mostly because of the 256MB of video memory. I went with 1GB of RAM rather than 2GB, but I got it in a single stick in case I decided to get the other gig later. The big news is that I went with the 100GB, 7200RPM, SATA hard drive. Hell yeah. My first dual processor box. I’m completely psyched.
Basic specs:
- Dual Core 1.8Ghz Intel Processor (basically two processors)
- 1GB DDR2 RAM
- 100GB 7200RPM SATA Drive
- 667Mhz Frontside Bus
- 256MB ATI Video Card (See Blizzard Games)
- Superdrive (Burns CDs and DVDs)
I love my current Mac; it’s been my main system (I don’t even have a desktop) for two years now, and it’s now being passed on to my girlfriend. While I love this system, it’s easy to see where it lacks in the processor and hard drive areas. It bogs down at times, but it’s roughly 100x more enjoyable a computing experience than either a Windows or Linux system, in my view.
This is only going to be my second Mac. The first one was an experiment; I just wanted to see if OS X was for me. Oh damn, it’s very much for me. I thought my next system would be a desktop, but I spend my computer time in a recliner. I’ll be on a laptop for the forseeable future. Plus, with these specs my new laptop dwarfs most desktops in performance.
Anway, I’ll keep you guys posted. I’m going to try and do a review when I get it.
In preparation, I’m trying to get my music and images organized. I want to get a single copy of everything on the file server so I can import them in cleanly. With my music this’ll be easy, but my pictures are backed up in multiple places and are generally a huge mess. Much work to be done.
Then I embark on the reinstall mission. Finding the serials to all the software I’ve purchased, re-customizing my Unix environment, etc. It’s lots of work, but it’s the good kind of work.
