&lt;p&gt;As for the second question, the way that would work is certain areas would be designated as PvP and combat-friendly, while other areas would be social. People could then choose to go into the environment they wanted to  at that point, and the local cops/bouncers would keep the peace to varying degrees depending on where you were.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This model works fairly well and is present in a number of existing MMORPGs.&lt;/p&gt;
