&lt;p&gt;Of course we know what they mean, but can you imagine reading this a year ago?  Even today my brain tried to parse this in such a way that the protesters were cartoons.  (&quot;Who Framed Roger Rabbit&quot; came to mind.)&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;You know ... as insane as the response to the cartoons seems, and as much as I favor a completely free press, I can imagine SIMILAR (though we might hope less violent) outrage here if cartoons were created (and run in a major newspaper) with gratuitous use of swastikas or the &quot;N&quot; word (a symbol and a word that have been pretty well eliminated from &quot;polite&quot; conversation in the US).&lt;/p&gt;
