It is getting absurd. But there are at least some amusing headlines. CNN’s main page currently has a link with the text:

    • Cartoon protesters stone Austrian Embassy

Of course we know what they mean, but can you imagine reading this a year ago? Even today my brain tried to parse this in such a way that the protesters were cartoons. (“Who Framed Roger Rabbit” came to mind.)

You know … as insane as the response to the cartoons seems, and as much as I favor a completely free press, I can imagine SIMILAR (though we might hope less violent) outrage here if cartoons were created (and run in a major newspaper) with gratuitous use of swastikas or the “N” word (a symbol and a word that have been pretty well eliminated from “polite” conversation in the US).

    Right, “Cartoon Protesters”.

How much damage could they really do? They’re two-dimensional.

And, as I should have predicted, a major Iranian newspaper (trying to make a point about the logic of protecting inciteful speech) is now having a contest for the best cartoon about the holocaust.
