“Homicide Bombers”

You make a very good point. Take out the anger, leave in the bit about the fact that their prefered terminology is redundant, and send your comment to Fox News. Who knows … maybe you’ll reach them … then you can continue with the other news organizations that use similar terminology.

A more important question is why do you watch Fox News? I gave them a (VERY BRIEF) chance when they started. I liked the concept of “We report, You decide,” but it was IMMEDIATELY clear that they were worse than other networks when it came to picking sides. Perhaps they’ve improved.

PS … I’m only now really getting time to read the book. I should have it finished soon. So far the most remarkable thing (meaning the thing I had absolutely no idea about) is the set of arrangements UPS has with clients that go beyond shipping. Remarkable (and brilliant).

I switch between BBC News, CCN, and FOX News on my XM radio while driving to and from work. I wasn’t watching Fox News (shudder). :)

What about bombs that are used to bring down buildings for in urban areas for construction? How about bombs that are used to clear cement out of cement trucks when it hardens? There are more types of bombs than those that kill people on purpose. That was a point I heard someone make about the term homicide bomber. Not that I like the term, but I do see the point. Since there are other types of bombs. Anyway good post.

Perhaps there is a difference between explosives and bombs. Bombs CONTAIN explosives. Explosives are used to level buildings, etc. Bombs seem to me to be a different thing … and a quick check of a dictionary shows that the explosive type of bomb (as opposed say to a long pass in American football) is defined as a WEAPON.

I agree with Carl, and my main point was simply the fact that these networks are refusing to use the term “suicide bomb”. That was my main issue. They said it shouldn’t be called a “suicide” bomb because it killed “other people”.

Well, language is for communication. Nobody thought, when the “suicide” term was being used, that it was referring to terrorists killing themselves in the middle of nowhere with no one around. They knew what it meant.

The reason to use the word “suicide” is because it’s different than NON-suicide bombings where the bomber doesn’t die. To be perfectly blunt about it, the reason to drop “suicide bombing” and move to “homicide bombing” is nothing more than iditotic political correctness.

Some idiot at a news network thought it would sound more sympathetic to the victims if they used the term, so they made an issue out of it. I maintain that it’s quite lame, makes no sense whatsoever, and should be identified as the PC that it is.

Sheesh, all you people seem to be assuming that “bombing” automatically implies killing. I mean, it’s not like, say, wielding a knife is automatically a bad thing — how else am I supposed to carve a turkey? Likewise, how am I supposed to make a smoothie without blowing the fruit to smithereens?
