I don't think I'm overly pessimistic; I see it how it is. I know that Ubuntu would be 100% flawless if we did have a Dell. The problem is my wife doesn't have a Dell laptop and didn't really have a choice. The same goes for many other people in the world that do not own a Dell. That's the problem. If it were a perfect world where everyone had the same few laptops/desktops to work with, Linux would have no problems. But does everyone in the world want a Dell? No. People like options.

This is the major problem for Linux before it will go mainstream. I'm not saying it won't--I agree with you. There is momentum, but it still needs some time to work for people besides us.

Robby: I think you are overly pessimistic. If your wife had a Dell laptop that was bought with Ubuntu preinstalled, she would have none of these problems. There is gradual momentum building towards Linux, but it will take time.

Linux is great for techies like us, but I'm worried that it will only stay that way and never go mainstream. I don't mind getting in the console and tinkering around to make something work, but my wife will not since she has no clue what she's doing. I know this is a cliche topic, but I keep realizing more and more how true it is in the real world.

The reason people buy Dell/Windows and Apple/Mac is because everything just works. I put Ubuntu on my wife's laptop and she loves it, but there are always so many problems that she sometimes asks me to just put Windows back on, even though she doesn't like it. I'm personally going to get myself a MacBook Pro for my web development since it has the power and functionality of a Unix-based system, as well as the support, design, and reliability of a company like Apple.

However, I agree with you 100% and think we should support these great distros for a future time when Linux can become a major competitor.
